Hi

Does Buffalo II (ie. ESS chip ES9018) contain out of band noise that must be filtered in I/V stage(IVY III) to avoid artifacts?
If so, at what frequency? Different for different sample frequencies? 44.1, 96, 192...

All DACs really need filtering to some degree. Because of the extremely high frequency of the asynchronous re-sampling and the dual digital filters in the ESS chip (IIR and FIR) the filter frequency can be much higher than other DACs. I usually aim for between 60khz and 100khz corner low pass. And the filter does not need to be very steep. 1st order is ok at 60-80 khz.

We do this filtering on our I/V stages. IVY-III and Legato.

Hmmm, 192kHz sampling material that does have freq components up to 96kHz.
(The ES9018 can do higher than that)
In IVY III you filter with 1st order -3dB (50% down) at 54kHz, thus damping valid music signal.
I can't hear that high of course, but it seems like a bit low -3dB freq for LP filter, or?
What is your experience here?
