I just finished assembling and testing SPDIF transceiver and OPUS DAC, but I am getting no sound out. SPDIF module is in HW mode and is configured as SPDIF IN / SPDIF and PCM out. DOUT pin is connected to OPUS DAC DIN pin. SPDIF input is connected to Denon 2200 SACD coax output. SPDIF LEDs are all red but the last one (I will attach a picture once I figure out how to do it). If I get the OPUS DAC working, my intention is to integrate it with HIFIDUINO OPUS DAC control unit by a DAC master glt. However, I have no experience troubleshooting digital audio, so I need some help as to where to start troubleshooting. I do have a good digital Tektronix LCD scope. many thanks

Hello, the spdif receiver is not locking into the signal, so there is no output. The switch settings look correct. I couple of things you can try: check the polarity of the spdif signal and check with the scope to see if you have a signal. Try moving the switches in the spdif receiver back and forth to ensure good contact. Other than that, the spdif receiver should work without adjustment...

Thanks glt, I am glad I got your attention. The SPDIF DIP switch is set for SPDIF IN / PCM + SPDIF OUT:

AIF > ON (left position)
TXSRC > OFF (right position)
AIF CONF 1 > OFF (right position)
AIF CONF 0 > ON (left position)

I tried to fiddle with DIP switches and if I move AIF CONF 1 switch to ON, then all 3 LEDS are green, but TRANS ERR always stays red. Should there be any sound if TRANS ERR LED is RED? Do you have a picture of what SPDIF OUT signal should look like on the scope? I just realized that OPUS DAC switches are all in neutral position, as it was shipped by TPA. I am trying to figure out why on Earth is the DIP switch on the OPUS board sealed. Do you suppose to peel the top layer off to access the switches, or how else could the switches be accessed? many thanks for replying glt

You'll get no sound with the Opus DIP switches in the default positions. (Also be sure you are cycling power on the receiver between switch position changes.)

The tape is on the switch to protect it from immersive soldering operations (which I do not do, but that's the only way those switches come). Just peel off the tape.

Hi Russ, I am quite sure LEDs are wired correctly because they are all wired the same way and I saw them change colors when I fiddle with SPDIF DIP switch. I'll configure the OPUS and give it another try tonight. I'll update the thread with my findings. Thanks.

No luck on my side after trying both OPUS HW and SW modes according to the attached picture. Playing CD with coax out and all I get is hiss from the speakers which gets louder as I turn the pre-amp volume up. SPDIF DIP switch setup is HIGH, LOW, LOW, HIGH and the LEDs are GREEN on UNLOCK and GEN FLAG, the other 2 are RED. Should all 4 LEDs be green under normal operation? Russ and Brian, how did you guys test the boards before you ship them?

have you tried more than one source? All LEDs should be green. Don't worry about Opus until you have the SPDIF receiver working.

For Opus, in SW mode you can leave all of the switches open.

I set all 4 DIP switches to OPEN and all the LEDs turned green. Right now DOUT feeds OPUS DIN. I attached 3 scope captures of Denon 2200 coax out feeding SPDIF IN. The signal looks fine to me. Last 2 shots are from the DOUT terminal. The signal doesn't seem good. What else could be the problem? Could it be that SPDIF board is at fault?

Please try a different source, and if your going to post pictures make them large enough to see details.

It could be that the SPDIF signal is good, it is just encoded LPCM(wont work) instead of PCM(will work).

Data out will be pretty much flat unless you have music playing with good PCM.

I can try my Quad CD player coax out instead, but the Denon 2200 works fine with Matrix Mini DAC. Is this incompatibility with LPCM mentioned anywhere?

Russ, could you please confirm that SPDIF module while in SW mode (all DIP switches OPEN) will take SPDIF signal IN and output SPDIF and PCM. I also want to try PCM IN/PCM OUT instead of SPDIF IN/PCM OUT.

Brian, what makes you think that? Russ said the LED green test is to put the module in all OPEN (SW) mode, so I did that and the LEDs turned green. However with this, PCM OUT is still dead meaning no sound.

That's not actually what he said. He said that when it's working, they should all be green. He also said that for the Opus in SW mode, leave all the switches open.

I was referring to the Opus in SW mode which can have all of the switches open.

You definitely would not do that with the receiver.

LPCM is encoded PCM of some sort, it is *not* raw stereo PCM music. It has to be decoded before it can be used. :)

Got that wrong with Opus and SW mode, so I'll change it tonight and re-try. The SPDIF LEDs are wired with a long lead soldered to + (anode) on the PCB. How does it meant to be?

Ahh, I wired the LEDs to the wrong Anode I guess. I will reverse them and re-test. Not sure what will that prove though. In the beginning all were red meaning green, and I still had no sound. Will try a Quad CD player as a source as Russ suggested and will post an update later on tonight. thanks for support Brian and Russ!

Swapped the LED leads,now the colors are right. I also used Quad CD player with coax out feeding the SPDIF module. When DIP is in 1001 position, SPDIF in / SPDIF + PCM out, I get UNLOCK and GEN FLAG LEDs red and the other 2 are green -- no sound out. If I flip TXSRC to + or 1 position, the UNLOCK LED goes green, but not the GEN FLAG LED which stays red -- no sound out. Is there a different module I can try, or could I send you this one back to try out in your setup? Right now I am dead in a water, so any support would be appreciated. More pictures are attached.

One thing at a time. Disconnect everything but the power supply and the SPDIF input. Then use the recommended settings as per the manual for SPDIF in and I2S out.
