Hi

I have just successfully built the Buffalo II, great sound!
I have also built the Toslink module powered with 5VDC.

When I feed it with optical from my Panasonic DMP-BD80 Blu-ray player, the sound out
of Buffalo II is not bad, but I would say worse than from the standard analog out on the BD player.
Bass is lacking in depth, air and timbre is less, I clearly prefer the analog out from the BD player.

Hmmm, I thought it should have been better going through the Buffalo II...
The Buffalo II should be able to beat this BD player...

I have a ok Toslink cable bought at a local hifi store (Hifi Klubben).
The Buffalo II locks onto the signal, no clicks or pops.

Any tips on how to improve?

FYI: I can measure approximately 1.2VDC out of TP Toslink module with DMM when idle.
I trust there is a DC filtering cap on the SPDIF input on Buffalo II board, or...?

Just connect the output of the TOTX board to D1. Leave the SPDIF switch open.

There is no need for a coupling cap, but there is no harm in using one if you like.

Hmmm.
I also have a coax SPDIF source (Squeezebox Touch)...
I toggle between these SPDIF sources (coax and toslink) using a high quality switch mounted on the cabinet for easy external input switching.
Can both SPDIF sources (coax and toslink) successfully be routed to D1 with the SPDIF DIP switch open for max performance?
Or do you recommend to mount an extra switch toggling the onboard DIP switch when I switch sources?
I need max performance as always...

Yeah, I thought I did not need it when I ordered in May (got it last week).
I am also uncertain regarding the CS8416 regarding jitter (VM8804 is said to be much better).
I believe the internal SPDIF receiver in the ESS chip is superior to the CS8416 thus minimal jitter.
But maybe I have misunderstood...?

Hi

I made a voltage divider on the toslink output, when I understood that the toslink module was TTL, now the sound is good from BD player.

I am still curious on the best SPDIF receiver combination though...
Anyone?

Hi Tom, can I ask what values you used for the divider on the toslink output please?

fwiw, I prefer spdif direct into buf (albeit buf24) than using mux.

Hi James!

I used some components that I had in my drawer, on + rail : 0.1uF in series with 374R, and 93R1 (after the 374R) to GND.

(I tried to draw this using -+ and spaces, easy enough, but this site truncates spaces after you post making it a mess. Hope you get the "picture"!)

Thanks Tom, just ordered a bufII and will probably go for legato once available. Lots of playing to come in the winter months...
