Did that, disconnected OPUS, but no change. DIP setting is 1001, SPDIF PCM IN from Denon 2200 (confirmed that it does not send LPCM, but PCM), played standard audio CD, UNLOCK and GEN FLAG LEDs are still RED.

I also tested SPDIF out from my Matrix mini, which produced a perfect signal, straight into TP SPDIF module and still UNLOCK and GEN FLAG LEDS are red. So as far as I can tell the module is not functioning properly. Is there a way for me to test the OPUS board without the SPDIF module?

Just to be clear, not just opus, disconnect you SPDIF out too.

Which color wires are carrying which signal? Make sure you do not have GND and your SPDIF signal reversed.

SPDIF out was never connected, only DOUT. Which one you suppose to connect to OPUS DIN, SPDIF OUT or DOUT?

For your S/PDIF In, is the yellow wire connected to the center pin, or the green wire?

In this picture:
UserPostedImage

It looks like you have both S/PDIF IN and OUT connected.

well, SPDIF OUT (green +, white -) was connected to the scope just to see if there is a signal coming out. It was not connected to the OPUS. For SPDIF IN, I have the yellow wire on the center pin (+) and the white is (-) or GND.

Ok. Just for reference when you get home: Center pin to ~, shell to GND.

I am 100% positive that is how things are connected when I was doing testing last night and this morning. ~ of SPDIF out was on the scope hot side and ~ of SPDIF in was connected to coax out center pin of Denon 2200 and I also tried SPDIF out from Matrix Mini DAC, with no luck.

Just so that we are all clear, green wires go to ~ and the center pin on the coax jack for SPDIF IN and OUT. Here is the picture.

Ok, well it is in the picture correctly showing no lock with no SPDIF signal connected. :)

With or without signal there is no difference. Could you send me another board I can try, and/or take this one and try it for yourself. I am quite sure the board is faulty.

A replacement board is on its way, thanks Brian, so the testing will continue once I get it.

Got the new board today, thanks Brian. Wired it up to the Denon 2200 DVD player coax source like before, played a CD, moved DIP switches to 1001 (I2S out), connected the PS and with the signal all LEDs went green right away. Then I connected the I2S outputs to the OPUS and OPUS analog out to my Quad 66/606 pre/power amp AV input and I got music in my speakers. More measurements and listening tests will follow but the initial impression is very positive. For me next is ordering a USB receiver module and connecting my HIFIDUINO controller, I already built before, to the OPUS and of course a new case. More pictures and scope traces of the working system will be posted as a reference to encourage those who are thinking of ordering those kits to pursue their dream. Thank you so much Brian and Russ, you guys rock!

Hello again, here are some pictures of the working OPUS with HIFIDUINO controller. GLT I hope you are reading this. Your controller works right "out of the box". Thanks a million. I knew you said in your blog you need a 5-3.3V level converter, because Wolfson 8741 DAC chip is not 5V tolerant, but being a stubborn dude, I thought I should first give it a shot without the level converter and whala, it works. Volume control is smooth and adds no coloring to the sound whatsoever. The sound out of my OPUS is just amazing. Crystal clear and crisp. It feels like you are in the recording studio. I will also copy the pictures to the OPUS forum and hopefully continue this thread there. GLT couple of things I'd like to try fix in the code, but I will need your help.

1. when volume reaches 00dB, it does not move up or down, you have to reset HIFIDUINO to get it back to default (-50dB)
I only tried it with the remote as I don't have the rotary encoder hooked up at the moment.

2. it would be usefult to have the code remember the last volume level used. Could we store this in EEPROM after power off?

3. couldn't get LCD and contrast to move up or down when display option is selected on the remote

Other then that, this is one heck of a DAC design. You are a bunch of awesome engineers. I love you all for making us ordinary folks enjoy your outstanding designs. Next is a TPA USB module and the case, then maybe Buffalo II, but OPUS just sounds soooo great. I love it.

Very nice!

You should use the level converter. It works without it... until you kill the inputs :-)
"not 5v tolerant" means it will slowly die...

I took a look at the latest opus code and there is a bug. I will fix it and let you know...

Hi glt, glad to see you are still following this thread. OK, I will add the level converter as I have few lying around.

One more thing I forgot to ask you. The input shown on the LCD seems to be frozen at 192k, it does not read the playback sampling rate, e.g. 44.1k in my case. Could you please look into this as well.

many thanks
