I have a Buffalo II. It says in the Volumite manual "it is convenient to omit the on-board LDO of the Volumite and add the jumper" in order to power the Volumite from the DAC VDD. Does the same go for the Toslink module? Is this just convenient, or is it somehow preferable to power both from the Placid (and use onboard regulation) and skip the DAC?

We recommend powering the Volumite from the Buffalo mainly so that the uC on the Volumite and the ES9018 power up at the same time.

You *could* power the Toslink module from the Buffalo as well by omitting it's vreg and adding a jumper, though I think it would be just as easy to power it from the Buffalo's V+ input supply.
