So Iv'e got myself a second hand scope.

It's a huge device out of the eighties I guess, but I think it works.
It gives a green line anyway.

But it came without cables. They're not too expensive I have seen, around 30,- euro's and they come in different types.

Do I have to look for any specifics?
I want to check the PSU's and data signals if possible...

Thank in advance!

Regarding the probes - start by telling us the make and model. And what's the bandwidth of the scope?

Yes, good question.

It's a Tektronix 5111

"Bandwidth: DC- 2 Mhz
Channels: 2
The 5111 Storage Oscilloscope is a single-beam storage oscilloscope; bi-stable, split-screen display. Stored writing speed is 20 div/ms in normal mode. Storage view time is one hour at normal intensity and up to ten hours at reduced intensity. Requires 5000-Series plug-ins (sold separately). Bandwidth: 2MHz (Plug-in dependent)"

Manual

Seems that a 2MHz Scope is quite low.....

But still it is usable for checking bit clocks, word clocks, etc. :)

Ok that's what I wanted to know too!
I got concerned when I saw the high numbers of modern scopes.

But I guess probes for 15MHz scopes for instance will work on my 2MHz scope?
Or do I also have to take other values into account?

And does anyone have any examples on how a correct working Placid should look like? Just a flat line?
And the different Word, Clock etc?

Thank in advance!

15M probes will do just fine. There's a lot of fine probes at the "bay".

Yes. A Placid should be a flat line. Once I measured it wasn't - resulted in a lot of work ;-) But that was then, this is now.
thanks 1 user thanked avr300 for this useful post.

Thx avr300,

I have ordered two of these.
I think they will arrive this saturday.

Let's hope it all looks normal...But on the other hand, the investment could pay off is there seems something to improve :) (and than hope it will be solved quickly)

Anyone any exampes of how a data signal will look like on the scope?
Offcourse data signals are 1 or 0 so a square alternating line I guess. But it should be nice to know what kind of patterns to expect the first time to know what it looks like if it's wrong.

Thx,

Jordo

Ok, I've go the Scope up and running.

First question:

Is this what to expect between the Line and Neutral from a wall socket?....

Now I want to test my data connections; Bit, Word, Master Clock...

Do I just put the probes on the Signal and reference ground with the music on?

Yes, but carefully, so as not to short things.

Ok, and according to you a 2MHz scope is sufficient?

Because I havent picked up any signal up to now...
