The question is: "What is the maximum practical length of the volumite wiring.". I am doing a build for my father, and he really should have a remote at his listening chair. I considered a remote, but it seems like over kill and pricey from what I have seen. I'd love to run the I2C about 15-20' if possible.

If using CAT5 wire, at least 30 feet should be doable. If using twisted pair converters or low clock frequencies, 300m can be reached. I think you'll be ok.
