I want to make a higher voltage regulated bipolar power supply (about +- 35 to 45V) with about 250mA current demand. If I would take a LM317HV, which can take a 60V short on the output and a LCDPS configured as bipolar, would that work? A LCBPS is not an option, because I could not find a high voltage LM337.

Furthermore, is it possible to calculate the resistor after the choke in such a way that the voltage presented to the LM317 is about 3V higher that the output, to spread the dissipation evenly? I would guess that the voltagedrop across a resistor is dependant on current through a resistor and the resistance, so V=I*R, with the dissipation P=I^2*R.

You would need to consult the data sheet.

I have never tried such an application.
