I have just bought a Samsung 75Q90 TV which only has optical Toslink outputting PCM.

I have bought a little Toslink to SPDIF co-ax converter which does not work with the Buffalo. The unit is fine as works with several other DACs.

I see the manual for the 32S mentions setting a switch to enable PCM but can't work out how to do this.

Can anyone please help?

From memory, the 32S only has an SPDIF-I2S switch. You would want that switched to SPDIF

There is no PCM switch. The 9018 decodes PCM by default.

Thanks Possum, I had downloaded the manual for the 9008, it was late last night!

I have the correct manual now and it says " The SPDIF switch is used to connect etc, then says It should be switched off ..such as when you plan on using PCM or DSD.

It's a bit late now but I'll try that in the morning, its a mystery otherwise.

If you switch it off then SPDIF input (which is what you want) will not work. It should only be off for PCM or DSD input via I2S

SPDIF is a protocol for sending data serially over a single signal wire (I2S sends it over 3 wires and is limited to very short distances but is much higher quality)

SPDIF can transmit a number of audio codecs, such as PCM, DTS, or dolby digital - your tv does PCM over SPDIF

Thanks for the clarification, I can't understand why this won't work with the Buffalo when it (and a replacement kindly sent by the supplier ) work fine with other optical sources.

I have bought a another device for very little money off eBay and it has optical in and normal audio RCA out so I'll use that for the TV into my system for now.

If the input is SPDIF, you must have the SPDIF switch ON. SPDIF is not TTL level, so the switch connects a comparator in series to convert the SPDIF input to the proper levels for the DAC. The DAC figures out if the input is PCM or otherwise.
