Where is the best place to put a volume pot for Ventus?

At the input. Using one at the output would increase the output impedance. Why use a volume pot at all when you can control the volume of the source? :)

I know, I know... :-)

Hacking a cdrom seem to imply using an OPUS with 16-bit right justified mode (supported by h/w mode). Since the DAC has a 16 bit mode (with the LRCK at 32 fs) I was thinking of trying analog volume control since the DAC might internally be operating in 16 bit and thus digital volume may cut too much resolution off.

Can the volume control be used between the input diamond stage and the output LM buffer? Since Volumite can take the OPUS v-mode balanced mode straight.

Thanks...

No, sorry, that would not work. The amp and the buffer are one unit. The buffer is in the feedback loop, basically making it the output stage of the amp itself.

One thing to note. No matter the source, digital volume work exactly the same on the Wm8741. :) 16 bit or 24 bit source still goes through exact same data path. :)

I'll have to read the datasheet again. I suppose everything gets converted/padded to 24 bit for the internal processing. I was wondering about the behavior for that "special" 16-bit/32fs mode...

Hello I would like to start using your products by trying the Ventis as a headphone amp (as I get my head around all this suff that is possible with your DACs DSD being the most interesting), to stat I plan on using it in the sinlge ended non inverting configuration, what would be the best/optimal pot value to use on the input ?

Also do you have any recommendatiosn for the brand of pot - for projects I typically use Alps blue velvet type
