Hi guys,
a newbie here. Will like to check if it is suitable (and recommended) that I connect the BuffaloII DAC to a Light Dependent Resistor. How will it compare to a Volumite?
Thanks

I have a LDR preamp I made from a kit I got from Uriah. http://www.buildanamp.com It sounds very clean and like it a lot. I havent hear a volumite. I made input switching on my LDR so it isnt the same. I can select 4 analog inputs-dac, phono, tuner, 78s, mp3 player, ect. A volumite is for the dac only. I also use a Mux so I have 4 digital inputs on the dac.

IIRC it is less than 10 ohms. I use a jolida tube amp with high impedence so the combo sounds great. I am gathering the parts for a balanced LDR next. Then if TPA finishes the retro both digital and vinyl will be balanced.

ESS's Sabre whitepaper discusses the volume control: it's implemented directly in the DAC's silicon and smoothly transitions between volume steps. AFAIK, Volumite simply provides us a control mechanism for 9018's native attenuation.

Thanks Are you using the DAC balanced or single ended? If you have to implement a balanced volume control with LDR's, you get into matching issues because balanced sets are fairly rare. I thought about the same thing, and decided to use the volumite for now. It isn't expensive, and if you decide to build a LDR based preamp or buffer, you can always just turn the volumite all the way up and it is like it isn't even there. Get the volumite and try it, it isn't expensive.
